About
artist:
the
My name is Lauryn Crittenden. I am a
sophomore at CU and this is my first art class
in college. In high school, I took art 3 years,
including sculpture and graphic design. As an
artist, I tend to shy away from deep emotions
and feelings as much as possible. I find that I
exceed in making art when motivated for
practical purposes, such as decoration for a
home or gifts for close friends. The bookshelf
pictured was something I did for a friend of mine during quarantine. The picture on the right was a birthday present for a close friend of mine. I find that I draw inspiration from the likes and dislikes of others, rather than my own self expression. Having a sort of prompt and set of images helps fuel my creative process.
During all my art classes, I always struggled with meeting prompt requirements that meant critical self evaluation and expression. For example, one sculpture project I was asked
to think about what it meant to walk a mile in my shoes, and to out that on an actual shoe sculpture. Me being be, I took it more literally and sculpted a foot in the shape of a high heel. My personal philosophy on art is if it doesn't serve a purpose, it's pretty boring and meaningless to me. I also took a graphic design class, and on the right is a shirt design I made for my swim team.
